Cwmdare! You’d be hard pressed to find it on any map, yet it was in this ex-mining village situated within a small blind-end valley in South Wales that on a crisp spring evening in 2015, a small ensemble of women gathered around a borrowed piano in the village’s only pub with great anticipation. With guidance from Musical Director, Llinos Davies, lyric sheets were gripped tightly and 27 ladies bravely embarked on an unknown journey as they vocally ventured into bringing alive this newly formed all-female community choir.
As piano chords formed, talking turned to song…
‘Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there’s always tomorrow’
The first verse of Lean on Me was sung in unison and Dare To Sing was born.
Testament to Wales being the land of song and choral singing being alive and thriving in this little South Wales valley, four years on, Dare To Sing now has an incredible 90 plus members and an ever growing repertoire list. Still led by Llinos and now accompanist Rebecca Rabjohns, as well as adding vibrancy to the village’s community spirit, many performances have helped raise funds for local charities. Dare To Sing members are keen to maintain their progress and would welcome the chance of future concerts either locally or further afield.
